How to use Facebook Messenger for sending SMS

Facebook Messenger is not just an app for chatting as a lot of us consider it to be. The Messenger app is built to meet other aspects of our daily activities. From chatting to playing games and making calls (audio and video), Facebook Messenger gives its user an amazing experience. Among the numerous features of Facebook Messenger (which a lot of people don't know about), Facebook Messenger can also be used for sending SMS and I'm going to show you how you can do that.

Android phones allow you to set a third party app in place of the default Messaging app for sending SMS and MMS. Facebook messenger is not the only third party app for sending SMS, there are others like Google Hangout and Olleh cs but I'll be talking on Facebook Messenger for today.

To use Facebook Messenger app for sending SMS, you'll need to download the app, so go head and download the Messenger app from Google Play Store. If you already have the app installed on your phone, you're one step ahead. Follow these procedures to start using the app for sending SMS

  • Open the Facebook Messager app on your phone and tap on the image icon at the top right of the app.
  • Select SMS
  • Select SMS in Messenger. A pop-up box will appear asking if you want to use Messenger instead of the default Messaging app for sending messages, select OK (or YES depending on your phone).
  • Use Messenger for SMS
  • Below the 'SMS in Messenger', The toggle button beside the 'Default SMS app' should be automatically selected. If not, select it. A pop-up box will appear asking if you want to set Messenger as your default Messaging app, Select YES/OK (depending on your phone).
  • You've Successfully set Facebook Messenger as your default Messaging app and you should begin to see your previously sent messages. You can also send new ones using Facebook Messenger.
